They’re generally not that smart. Big circles are what they’re known for. Ask any Beagle.
My Cairn terrier exhibits same blindness to a stock still rabbit. Will zip right past one. If the rabbit moves then it is chase on, but have seen this a few times in my own back yard.

Rabbits are famous for that. They'll crouch down in the weeds and you can walk right over them and not see them.
