The Dark Side Of The Moon was Released in March of 1973. I was just over 11 years old.
Going back that far in time, I don't remember all the details, or time-line but my friend "K" and
I were hanging out with his older hippie brother "E".
"E" was a bit eccentric.
Probably early 20's. He had long hair, rented a small shack somewhere I don't remember,
bead curtains in the doorways and two doberman dogs.
"E" also had an old beat up van, no shit huh, stereotypical.
There was couch in the back and not much else, oh ya, the two dogs.
"K" and I were sitting in the back when E picked up his friend "D".
Now "D" was also interesting.
He had been born with complications so he talked kinda slurred and walked awkwardly.
He didn't drink, but I remember the stories of cops always thinking he was drunk.
Smart guy though.
Anyway, we were sitting in back when "D" gets in the car. They proceeded to light up some joints.
I had no idea what that was at the time.
"D" says "Check out this album" It may have been 8 track or cassette.
They loaded the album and nothing. You know typical Pink Floyd lead in.
Then the heart-beat starts....
We were all blown away. Drove around listening to that album all afternoon.... probably
had a contact high.
I still listen to DSOTM as needed therapy.
The good old days..............
That's a coincidence. Had a 67 GMC van. Had this on 8track. My current squeeze at the time and me and me drove around digging the tunes.

ReplyDeleteAh Dark Side ! One of those rare albums you can drop on the turntable ,put on the head phones and have no desire to skip a track .its hard to tell where one song ends and a new one starts Brilliant !

ReplyDeleteDark Side and Wish You Were Here were the last two albums cut as a band working together, after that their new deal with EMI paid out royalty percentages based almost entirely on songwriting credit, and Roger Waters gradually started to dominate the creative content of their albums, to the point that The Wall is almost entirely credited to him.
ReplyDeleteI was introduced to that album about the same time, thanks to my older brother. Blew my tiny mind. I had no idea music like that existed. I still have my brothers album, with posters and stickers, to this day.
ReplyDeleteIf you haven't already, Nick Mason's book "Inside Out" is a great read. I was surprised. He is a good story teller.

ReplyDeleteFirst time I did acid DSOTM started up just as I was starting to get off. I was 19, in the army stationed in Germany. I swear I saw long colorful streamers flying out of the front of those big assed Kenwood speakers. Wonderful!

I glanced in to check it out in and Ernie, who was 16, was sitting in the dark listening to "Money" which had just come out on a small radio."Hey kid " He said "C'mon in you have to hear this song" Great stuff. Bad boy Ernie later went on to be a USMC General
ReplyDeleteI was 9at the time and in reform school in New mexico .I was walking down the hall of the dormitory one day when I heard heavy thumping music coming from a room and glanced in to check it out . Ernie ,who was 16 at the time, was sitting in the dimmest light listening to a small radio playing "Money" which had just come out. "Hey kid " He said glancing up at me " C'mon in and sit down, you have got to hear this song" Great stuff that was. Old bad boy Ernie went on to be a general in the USMC
