Not "unaldulterated bullshit" since it's based on a real incident, but the tale grew in each retelling. The plane did have a tail number, but no name (it was a very, very newly delivered plane), it crash landed in a field near a British Army encampment (not an RAF base), the hatches were open, and no parachutes were on board.
Obviously, the -17 was trimmed very well, and it was a long shot that it landed perfectly. As to the crew, well... strangeness. Aliens. Gotta be.
