Thatt'll ruin your day. 40 or so years ago, I was on a business trip to Denver with another guy from the company. We decided to to stay an extra day and ski at Aspen. We totally under estimated the driving time and arrived at aspen sometime after 9:00. At the time, Aspen was offering half day tickets that started at 1:00 if memory serves me correctly, but it may not. Mega fog back that far. Any way, we decided to ride around a bit before skiing. We took this road west of Aspen that was apparently a pass over the next mountain West. We topped out at `11000 feet, as delineated by a sign at the top. We turned around and headed back the way we had come. About half way down we rounded a bend and there sat a boulder, about the size of the second one in the gif, sitting in the middle of the road. About 20 minutes had passed from when we first went by that spot. We both looked at each with eyes as big as saucers, then giggled like hell at our good fortune.
About 20 years ago up on Snoqualmie Pass there were some places where the mountain sides came almost close enough to the road to touch from the passenger side of a car heading west. In the decades since they have widened the road considerably. But there were two women in a car just driving along heading west to Seattle and WHAM! A huge boulder spalled off and fell square onto the car. Both women were killed immediately. Ya just never know.
If that happened in my neck o da woods the road itself would be destroyed, It doesn't look like that happened there. The difference between lowest bidder and getting it right?

Holy crap, I had to watch that a couple of times, before I caught what hit that car. Wow, that guy was lucky.

ReplyDeleteWithout spotters watching upwards on both sides of the car, a driver would almost never see it in time or whether to speed up or slow down.
