There were three crossing groups that night. Only the one with Washington made it across through the ice; this was the Little ice Age that did not start dissipating until the 1850's. They were badly delayed. Three men died of exposure on the march from the landing area to Trenton. They wanted to attack before dawn but the delay meant they arrived just as light was breaking. In a blizzard. The net result was that the Hessians saw the Americans coming across a field but could not make out what they were seeing. By the time they figured it out, the Americans were on them. Bad day for them...
