I didn't think he would go to trial. Too many big people were in danger. With the documents available, they are still in danger, but it makes an investigation more difficult.
a recognized method in the fed witness protection system to protect a valued source is to have them "die" while in custody. this should send the conspiracy people insane. need more soda and popcorn.
also, it is recognized that a reluctant witness who has already "died" in custody is somewhat more enthused about providing information. especially if the alternative to not providing required information is considered.
