Take it from a dude who has spent lots of time in Ireland (Both the Republic and Ulster) & Scotland. Those words are as common as: Thank-you, Sir Maam & You're welcome, in the U.S. (Incidently, youll never hear those spoken in Ireland.)
The use of the words most Americans (outside of the ghettos, of course) would find extremely offensive is accepted as common amongst 80% of the population. Both the older people and youngsters just out of the cradle use them in their every day activities.
You need to spend time in the Celtic envirornment to understand the childish nature of it.
