I've wondered, given the time to bore the holes set the explosive charges and then blast, vs just excavation ny machines, whether the time spent is the same for both.
Ground that has been sitting undisturbed for a long period gets VERY hard due to compaction from gravity and rain. Add in minerals and it's even harder.
Time is money. They reason they blast is to make excavating easier and have the ability to use smaller, less expensive machines to do it, IMHO.
