Years ago, we had a project where a giant forklift hauled on a trailer damaged an overpass girder. The driver was avoiding a permit load, ducked through some backroads, and the over-height forklift mast caught a 36 inch wide flange girder on an overpass. We had to place falsework to support the edge of the overpass, cut out the damage girder, and weld a new girder in place. The forklift was toast. I never heard what happened to the driver, but we made some good money on an emergency project.
Over 44 years or so I made a good bit of money painting the repairs after people did things like this. Nice contract too, the state dot is billing insurance and it is such a small job that the bids were always very high.
Y'know those BIG buckets for scooping up ore? One didn't quite fit under the Seminole Hwy overpass in Madison, WI. I heard it and saw the cement dust in the air but missed seeing the actual impact. I guess all those signs about clearance are just suggestions.
