Yeah, Matt. Some old guys still refer to cam grinds like that. Harkens back to the flat-head days, where a hot street grind was called a 3/4 cam - or a three quarters race cam.
Right. Cams are specified by lift and duration by people that understand what they're talking about. Full race, 3/4 race, 7/64 race... whatever, those terms don't really mean anything, regardless of how many "hot rod guys" throw the terms around.
Mathew, Those sorts of cam descriptors were used by the guys that ground the cams. They were the ones that experimented with cam profiles to figure out what an engine could tolerate. Back in early muscle car days you were lucky if they even bothered to tell you any real numbers about the grind. Same for motorcycles. Most every cam profile had a label, mostly because the maker only had a small handful for any particular engine block, oriented toward the common uses for that engine. Dragrace, roadrace, street, and boat, were pretty much all you might find for a particular engine. You are simply stating you are ignorant of the history of high performance vehicles, and how they were developed.
In 1979, I was burning donuts in the 73 LTD family car. It was perfect for that. I did a left handed one, and finished it off from the passenger seat. I've worn a seat belt religiously since.
I had a 1980 camaro and the door opened while making a left hand turn. Long, heavy doors. If they're not closed tightly, they CAN open. Junk ass cars anyways! Ohio Guy
Idle was too lumpy for ol' Lumpy.

Case in point... I'll bet those motorcycle 3/4 race boat cams were popular. Aye yi yi.

His car really hated him.
ReplyDeleteI've stayed consistent with seatbelt usage since learning to fly with the purpose being to keep me within reach of the controls.
