Landed in Australia in May 1942, and did the MacArthur Tour Route through New Guinea and the Philippines. He said his men called him "Pappy". When he landed at Omaha Beach he was just shy of being 31 years old. I bet most of his fellow soldiers saw him as an "old man".Jeffery in Alabamahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17335332266715975717noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-365858055267871677.post-91182951760232691702016-02-02T19:24:18.713-05:002016-02-02T19:24:18.713-05:00My grandpa was there. He was wounded by tank sharpnel - they never took it out as it was too close to his spinal cord. That was the end of the war for him.sig94https://www.blogger.com/profile/11460563552989533923noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-365858055267871677.post-86317126260722627582016-02-01T17:49:20.492-05:002016-02-01T17:49:20.492-05:00Thanks for the tip TT. They have a "must see" War Museum and the Mardasson Memorial is very moving. I was there 4 years ago and nearly got run over by a Sherman tank that was cruising down the road. tsquaredhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02737130316088634658noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-365858055267871677.post-68240765277685907182016-02-01T14:26:33.288-05:002016-02-01T14:26:33.288-05:00I drove through the Gap last night.
